The image of the settlement as an outstanding vacation area is determined by the row of terraced villas built at the end of the 19th century. The surroundings of Verőce have been populated as early as the Roman period. The first written record to mention the village dates from 1324. The settlement was founded by Germans and its significance can be seen by the fact that in the 16th century it was designated a market town. Important battles were fought in this area; Miklós Pálffy and Archduke Maximilian (Miksa) defeated Turkish troops here twice in 1597.

Since many artists chose Verőce as their place of rest and relaxation, a significant intellectual effervescence took place in Verőce at the beginning of the 20th century. Among the more famous were authors Endre Ady, Zsigmond Móricz, Dezső Kosztolányi, Frigyes Karinthy and composer Zoltán Kodály. Géza Gorka, the famous ceramist artist worked for several years in a local tile factory built in 1925.
