Nagymaros

Nagymaros is a lovely town in the picturesque Danube Bend, at the foot of the Börzsöny Mountains. The town boasts the most beautiful view of the Danube Bend from Julianus tower on the top of Hegyestető (482 m).

Its history dates back to Roman times, proved by archeological finds in the main square. The settlement is mentioned under the name “Morus” in a document from 1257. Saxons were settled down here between 1715 and 1735.

In our age, Nagymaros became famous for the plan of building a barrage for the common Slovak—Hungarian hydroelectric power plant. After 1989, conservationists forced the government to abandon this plan and works were stopped.

Among other famous people, Kálmán Kittenberger, writer, hunter and explorer in Africa also lived in Nagymaros.

The Roman Catholic Church was built in the 14th century. Outside you can admire its octagonal 15th century late-gothic tower with the string course, and the stone-framed lancet windows with sill moulding. You can get inside through a gothic archivolt under the tower. Above the main entrance you can read the year “1509” in the arch stone of the gate. The Gothic Sanctuary with buttresses is framed by three sides of octagon.
